About Mr Jim Duthie

A graduate of the University of Otago, Jim has a sub-specialty interest in prostate disease, both cancer and benign conditions, and integrated men’s health. Jim is a high-volume prostate cancer surgeon with more than 10 years’ experience in Robotic surgery, having completed a Fellowship in Robotic Surgery at Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute in Melbourne. Jim is a surgical trainer and mentor in Robotic Surgery. Jim was instrumental in acquiring New Zealand’s first robotic surgery simulator, has published research on robotic surgery and developed training materials for surgeons and surgical assistants in robotic surgery. Jim is the New Zealand representative for PCOR Australasia, the Prostate Cancer Outcomes Registry which maintains quality standards in prostate cancer surgery. Jim is committed to leading edge prostate cancer diagnosis and management including the use of MRI, targeted transperineal prostate biopsy, PSMA PET scanning, and nerve-sparing robotic surgery. Jim offers a range of options for men with benign prostate hyperplasia, having over a decades’ experience in Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostate (HoLEP), which offers advantages over traditional TURP surgery, and was the first person to perform the Urolift procedure in New Zealand.

In order to provide the most comprehensive health care possible, Jim has completed both a degree in Psychology, and a post-graduate certificate in Human Nutrition from the University of Otago. Jim is Medical Advisor to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand and Testicular Cancer New Zealand. Jim has in the past designed two successful smartphone apps for men with prostate cancer, resources for PCFNZ and the Australian Prostate Cancer Centre, has been a writer on men’s health for the British Journal of Urology International, the European Medical Journal, and NZ Doctor magazine. Jim is the only Southern Hemisphere Urologist to be a contributor to the popular ProstateMatters.co.uk website and has worked with the developers to adapt a New Zealand version of the site.

Jim works privately through both Promed House in Tauranga and Wakefield Hospital in Wellington, and at Wellington Public Hospital.
